Critical and Academic Writing

Course Description

Critical writing requires strong writing skills, it needs to thoroughly understand the topic and the issues, it needs someone to develop an essay structure and paragraph structure that allows him/she to analyze different interpretations and argument. The course will cover the following topics; What Academic Writing is and is not, identifying relevant Literature, developing theses in academic writing, Critical analysis for academic papers, Literature reviews: the dos and don’ts, Creating coherence and Reference tools available at Makerere University

Aim: Introduce fellows to advanced critical and academic writing skills for writing for academia Objective: By the end of the course, Fellows should be able to:

  1. Identify related literature to their course of study
  2. Develop critical skills for writing
  3. Write Literature reviews
  4. Discuss literature in light of their course of study
  5. Express themselves in coherent style

Scope: This course will follow a practical format where students will do group discussions and oral presentation. The course will cover the following topics; What Academic Writing is and is not, identifying relevant Literature, developing theses in academic writing, Critical analysis for academic papers, Literature reviews: the dos and don’ts, Creating coherence and Reference tools available at Makerere University.
