Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe holds a PhD in Architecture from the Kiev National University of Construction and Architecture and has been the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University since 1st September 2017. Before assuming his current position, Prof. Nawangwe served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration (2013-2017), Principal of the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (2012-2013), the Dean of the Faculty of Technology (2002-2012), the Head of the Department of Architecture (1989-2002), all at Makerere University.
As Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nawangwe has concentrated his efforts on transforming Makerere into a modern research-led University. To achieve this, he has presided over several Interventions aimed at making Makerere a more efficient and professionally managed institution, including restructuring of academic programmes, restructuring of the administration function, digitisation of all administrative processes, approval of policies to support research and innovation, and others.
Prof. Nawangwe is an architect by profession, and his research interests are in vernacular architecture, social housing, and sustainable urbanisation. He has published more than 70 papers in these areas.
