Buyinza Mukadasiis a Professor of Forestry Resource Economics and holds a PhD degree in Forest Management from Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia. He has over 25-year experience of university research and teaching in the field of Forestry and Natural Resource Economics. He has grown though the University service to the rank of Full Professor (Oct. 2010) at Makerere University. He has successfully supervised over 100 MSc and 10 PhD students and served as an academic mentor to 15 Postdoctoral fellows in the fields of forestry, environment, and natural resources management.

He has published widely in the field of Forestry economics, Community-based natural resource management, and Research Administration. He has authored eight books, ten book chapters, more than 150 publications in international peer-reviewed; more than 100 conference proceedings as an organiser or presenter.

Previously he served as the Director, Directorate of Research and Graduate Training, Makerere University (2013 – 2022), Deputy Director responsible for Graduate Training and Administration (2010 – 2013), Head, Department of Community Forestry and Extension, Makerere University (2005-2010). Being a member of the Senior University management team, he has steered the delivery of the University’s ambitious research strategy, he successfully provided inspirational leadership, ensuring rapid and effective University responses to industry need, new research funding opportunities and government policies.

He is a member of the Society for Research Administration International. He has acted as Lead researcher/Principal investigator (PI) to about 15 International multi-institutional research projects including the Makerere-Sweden bilateral research programmes, 2015 – 20202 worthy USD$40 million;  the Carnegie funded project “Nurturing Emerging Research Leaders through Post-doctoral Training in the East African Region (NERLPEA)” Grant No. G-16-54068; Grant Volume: USD$ 1,000,000, 2017 -2020; the EU Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme, Grant: 581272-PANAF-1-2016-1-ZA-PANAF-MOBAF ARISEII – Africa Regional International Staff/Student Exchange: Food Security and Sustainable Human Wellbeing II. UCT-Mak-Addis. Funded by European Commission. (USD$500,000), the Swedish funded project on “Innovative Doctoral Education for Global Food Security”, where Implemented the regional training in the field of Pedagogy, Scientific research methods, and Information management, funded by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs through SLU. (USD$ 500,000); many other projects worth about USD 2million including the INTRA-ACP AFRICA (MWALIMU NYERERE) and the CARIBBEAN & PACIFIC (Euro 2million).

He has spearheaded several national and international research and development projects in the fields of forestry, environment and natural resource management.  He is the Ugandan Team Leaders for the “Protected Area Management, Climate Change and Poverty in Africa” Project, 2007 – 2011. He is also involved in the on-going World Bank Research and Development Project focusing on strengthening Forests, Poverty and Climate Change linkages in Africa, Magadascar, and Asia. He has served as the  Chairperson, Board of Directors of the National Forestry Authority since 2010. His research interests include forest resources economics, ecosystem health and community livelihoods. He has published widely especially in the field of forest management approaches, economics of biodiversity conservation, and environmental impact assessment studies. Has a wealth of consultancy experience with special focus on Environmental Incomes and Rural Income (Funded by Cochran Fellowship Programme, USA); Natural resource management for rural livelihood enhancement; Decentralized forest service delivery for rural development in the Uganda (FAO Funding).

His research interests include forest resources economics, ecosystem health and community livelihoods where he has published widely. He has held important positions including being a member of the Makerere University Senate; Board of Research and Graduate Training; Board of Management of the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa.

He has chaired several national, regional and international boards of professional organisations include the Board of Directors of the National Forestry Authority (2003-2007).
