Peace Fellows study visit to Kigali, Rwanda

In April, Cohort 7 Peace Fellows traveled to Rwanda to study issues of mass atrocities, identity, ethnicity, and indigenous methods of conflict resolution, particularly the Gacaca System. While in Rwanda, the fellows interacted with communities that benefitted from the Gacaca system and conducted a tour of the museum for the Campaign Against Genocide, which illustrates in detail the unilateral decision to stop genocide and rescue victims in 1994.

The field study focused on issues of mass atrocities, identity, ethnicity, and indigenous methods of conflict resolution, particularly Gacaca. The fellows also learnt the field practicalities as regards peacebuilding and lived realities of violence and the various peacemaking initiatives being undertaken in different areas to bring about peace in society.
